Timmis takes his Talent Down South

16 year old Burlington native and long time SST athlete, Mercer Timmis (Canisius Crusaders running back) has had no problem adjusting to a new school, a new game and a new country. After excelling as running back for Assumption High School and the Burlington Stampeders in the OVFL, Mercer has dreams of playing college football in the States and took it upon himself to make sure he didn’t let the opportunity slip.

Mercer took the initiative to send a personal highlight video of his playing time with the Stamps to Canisius high school in Buffalo, NY. The coaches had their doubts about the star running back, just because of the level of competition he was facing here in Canada, none the less the Canisius staff decided to give Mercer a shot and invited him out to a practice and Merc has been turning the heads of his coaches and fans ever since. His combination of size and speed is very unique at his tender age. His ability to cut and juke around opponents is second to none, not to mention that he looks for contact and has the strength to run right through it. He has great mechanics and his ability to transfer his weight and protect the ball at the same time is very effective, allowing him to hit the hole at full speed. Mercer is becoming notorious at turning nothing into something and it’s working to his advantage.

After dominating COMFL and high school, Mercer is now lighting up the American competition, his numbers have hardly dropped off since last season after making the transition to four down football. Mercer has already run for 1,364 yards on 127 carries and 15 TD’s in only 9 games. That is good for a jaw dropping 11.3 yards per carry. His coach has nothing but good things to say about his new offensive weapon.

“If you find a better back than this kid, let me know.” Harris said (Head coach of the Canisius Crusaders). “I don’t think there is one. Mercer is an explosive runner. He runs hard, he runs violently. UB is definitely interested in him. Frankly, there will be a lot of colleges that want a kid that big, that physical and that fast” Harris says he was surprised at just how good Timmis has been.

Mercer has helped led the Crusaders to a 7-2 record, with one game remaining before the playoffs begin. The team will be looking to go to 8-2 and head into their playoff game in Ralph Wilson Stadium on a 4 game winning streak. We would like to wish Mercer and the Canisius Crusaders the best of luck with their upcoming game and playoff run!

CFL Players Come Up Big for Their Teams, as the Playoff Race Heats Up!

Argo Linebacker and SST Oakville owner Kevin Eiben is having another phenomenal season for the Boatmen. Eiben has been an impact player on the Argonaut defense for years and is having yet another outstanding season leading his team with 95 tackles (which puts them in second for that category in the CFL). Kevin and the Argo defense are preparing themselves for their first playoff appearance in 2 years. The Argos will be relying heavily on their defensive line up, led by the team captain (Eiben) to take them deep into the playoffs, as the team has had a hard time finding their touch on offense.

Another SST athlete and special team standout for the BC Lions, James Yurichuk, is having another strong season. He is leading his team and 5th in the CFL on special teams with 19 tackles. Yurichuk’s hard work and ball pursuit has also earned him some playing time on the Lions defense at the linebacker position. Last week against the first place Stampeders, ‘Yuri’ recorded 2 defensive tackles, helping lead his team to a very important 36-31 victory, to keep pace with the Eskimos for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
