SST Athlete News
SST’s professional hockey players had an amazing showing in their NHL camps as four of our athletes have been able to crack the BIG squad. We would like to congratulate Tim Brent of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Brian McGratton of the Boston Bruins, Zac Dalpe of the Carolina Hurricanes and Kyle Clifford of the Los Angeles Kings. All of these athletes spent countless hours training and preparing themselves for the pre season camps and games. The hard work and dedication up to this point has paid off for these athletes. We would like to wish them the best of luck in the upcoming seaosn as the hard work has just started. We know you can hang with the “Big DAWG”, now it’s time to prove you can hang with the “Big DAWGS.” Keep working hard and staying positive and the rest will take care of itself, we are very proud of all of you!
“It’s just the beginning,” he said, “so we have to keep trucking away and stay focused and make a career out of it now.”-Kyle Clifford, Los Angeles Kings
A Word from Timmy Brent
“A little nervous but more excited than anything,” said Brent. “It’s kind of a dream being a Leaf fan growing up, being here opening night and scoring…”
As if taking the opening faceoff, on opening night wasn’t good enough for Timmy Brent, he also played an amazing game, potting his first goal as Maple Leaf, and the Leafs first goal of the 2010-2011 season on a beautiful tip in while parked in front of the net. Brent also logged 16:08 of ice time, he was very effective killing penalties, blocking shots and was extremely responsible in his own end, helping the leafs get off to a 1-0 start and leaving a very good first impression on head coach Ron Wilson. Tim received the ultimate back-handed compliment from coach Ron Wilson, who isn’t much on compliments:
“I can put him on the ice and know nothing bad is going to happen.”-Ron Wilson, Leafs Head Coach
Dalpe Records First NHL Point
Brent wasn’t SST’s only NHLer making a name for himself. In Zac Dalpe’s first NHL game with the Hurricanes he notched, his first ever NHL point as he assisted on the Canes’ second goal scored by Babchuck. His assist helped the Canes’ edge the Minnesota Wild on opening night, getting his NHL career of on the right foot.
From The Field
Our CIS players also made their presence felt on the gridiron this past week. Fraser Vrenjak of the St. Mary’s Huskies, made his first interception as a CIS player to this point Fraser has an interception along with two sacks and 10 tackles through the first 4 games. Chris Daly of the Ottawa Gee-Gees also had a big game last Saturday in a tough loss to U of T, despite the outcome of the game, Chris chipped in with an interception and 8 solo tackles. Junior Turner of Bishop’s has also had an explosive start to the season as he finds himself in third on the team in tackles with 24, 5 of them being tackles for a loss.
Stellar Sliding!
Canadian National Bobsledder Chris Korol, just finished a long month of training for an opportunity of a lifetime! He has the chance to be a part of the National Bobsled team and slide with Jesse Lumsden. Chris trained very hard through the month of September here at SST and he had tremendous gains and extremely good fitness testing at the combine, as all three of his major lifts went up by at least 30 pounds. At the testing Chris power cleaned 290 lbs, front squatted 270 lbs and bench pressed 260. Chris had the highest gains out of all the sliders at the initial combine. Keep up the hard work Chris you have done a great job to this point don’t slow down at all buddy!!
We are very proud of all the SST athletes who are working the butts off to do what they love at the highest level. With hard work comes reward as all of our athletes have proven time and time again.
Everyone have a safe and happy thanksgiving, until next week….CHEERS!!
